**Dynamics Strength of Materials and Durability in Multiscale Mechanics Book Review:**

This book reviews the mathematical modeling and experimental study of systems involving two or more different length scales. The effects of phenomena occurring at the lower length scales on the behavior at higher scales are of intrinsic scientific interest, but can also be very effectively used to determine the behavior at higher length scales or at the macro-level. Efforts to exploit this micro- and macro-coupling are, naturally, being pursued with regard to every aspect of mechanical phenomena. This book focuses on the changes imposed on the dynamics, strength of materials and durability of mechanical systems by related multiscale phenomena. In particular, it addresses: 1: the impacts of effective dissipation due to kinetic energy trapped at lower scales 2: wave propagation in generalized continua 3: nonlinear phenomena in metamaterials 4: the formalization of more general models to describe the exotic behavior of meta-materials 5: the design and study of microstructures aimed at increasing the toughness and durability of novel materials

**Mechanics of Materials Book Review:**

This book is the first to bridge the often disparate bodies of knowledge now known as applied mechanics and materials science. Using a very methodological process to introduce mechanics, materials, and design issues in a manner called "total structural design", this book seeks a solution in "total design space" Features include: * A generalized design template for solving structural design problems. * Every chapter first introduces mechanics concepts through deformation, equilibrium, and energy considerations. Then the constitutive nature of the chapter topic is presented, followed by a link between mechanics and materials concepts. Details of analysis and materials selection are subsequently discussed. * A concluding example design problem is provided in most chapters, so that students may get a sense of how mechanics and materials come together in the design of a real structure. * Exercises are provided that are germane to aerospace, civil, and mechanical engineering applications, and include both deterministic and design-type problems. * Accompanying website contains a wealth of information complementary to this text, including a set of virtual labs. Separate site areas are available for the instructor and students. Combines theories of solid mechanics, materials science and structural design in one coherent text/reference Covers physical scales from the atomistic to continuum mechanics Offers a generalized structural design template

**Dynamics of Heterogeneous Materials Book Review:**

This monograph deals with the behavior of essentially nonlinear heterogeneous materials in processes occurring under intense dynamic loading, where microstructural effects play the main role. This book is not an introduction to the dynamic behavior of materials, and general information available in other books is not included. The material herein is presented in a form I hope will make it useful not only for researchers working in related areas, but also for graduate students. I used it successfully to teach a course on the dynamic behavior of materials at the University of California, San Diego. Another course well suited to the topic may be nonlinear wave dynamics in solids, especially the part on strongly nonlinear waves. About 100 problems presented in the book at the end of each chapter will help the reader to develop a deeper understanding of the subject. I tried to follow a few rules in writing this book: (1) To focus on strongly nonlinear phenomena where there is no small parameter with respect to the amplitude of disturbance, including solitons, shock waves, and localized shear. (2) To take into account phenomena sensitive to materials structure, where typical space scale of material parameters (particle size, cell size) are presented in the models or are variable in experimental research.

**An Introduction to the Mathematical Theory of Dynamic Materials Book Review:**

This fascinating book is a treatise on real space-age materials. It is a mathematical treatment of a novel concept in material science that characterizes the properties of dynamic materials—that is, material substances whose properties are variable in space and time. Unlike conventional composites that are often found in nature, dynamic materials are mostly the products of modern technology developed to maintain the most effective control over dynamic processes.

**Crack Dynamics in Metallic Materials Book Review:**

This book provides an up-to-date knowledge on theory and experimental results of rate-dependent fracture processes in metallic materials. The objective is to expose the current status of a growing branch of fracture mechanics called generally "Dynamic Fracture". Crack dynamics takes into account not only the effects of inertia but also rate sensitivity of a material under consideration. This volume has been prepared by four leading authorities in fracture dynamics: D.R. Curran, J.F. Kalthoff, J.R. Klepaczko and F. Nilsson. A broad range of problem is covered: dynamic fracture theory, application of dynamic fracture mechanics, dynamic crack inition and microstatistical fracture mechanics in dynamic fracture. The book in its present format may serve as a text supplement in lecturing on fracture mechanics. On the other hand, it may serve as an instructional aid in engineering of fracture prevention.

**Advances in Computational Dynamics of Particles Materials and Structures Book Review:**

Computational methods for the modeling and simulation of the dynamic response and behavior of particles, materials and structural systems have had a profound influence on science, engineering and technology. Complex science and engineering applications dealing with complicated structural geometries and materials that would be very difficult to treat using analytical methods have been successfully simulated using computational tools. With the incorporation of quantum, molecular and biological mechanics into new models, these methods are poised to play an even bigger role in the future. Advances in Computational Dynamics of Particles, Materials and Structures not only presents emerging trends and cutting edge state-of-the-art tools in a contemporary setting, but also provides a unique blend of classical and new and innovative theoretical and computational aspects covering both particle dynamics, and flexible continuum structural dynamics applications. It provides a unified viewpoint and encompasses the classical Newtonian, Lagrangian, and Hamiltonian mechanics frameworks as well as new and alternative contemporary approaches and their equivalences in [start italics]vector and scalar formalisms[end italics] to address the various problems in engineering sciences and physics. Highlights and key features Provides practical applications, from a unified perspective, to both particle and continuum mechanics of flexible structures and materials Presents new and traditional developments, as well as alternate perspectives, for space and time discretization Describes a unified viewpoint under the umbrella of Algorithms by Design for the class of linear multi-step methods Includes fundamentals underlying the theoretical aspects and numerical developments, illustrative applications and practice exercises The completeness and breadth and depth of coverage makes Advances in Computational Dynamics of Particles, Materials and Structures a valuable textbook and reference for graduate students, researchers and engineers/scientists working in the field of computational mechanics; and in the general areas of computational sciences and engineering.

Another aim of this book is to provide engineering students as well as practising engineers with a basis to help them bridge the gaps between undergraduate studies, advanced courses on mechanics and practical engineering problems. The book contains numerous examples and their solutions. Emphasis is placed upon student participation in solving the problems. The new edition is fully revised and supplemented by additional examples. The contents of the book correspond to the topics normally covered in courses on basic engineering mechanics at universities and colleges. Volume 1 deals with Statics and Volume 3 treats Particle Dynamics and Rigid Body Dynamics. Separate books with exercises and well elaborated solutions are available.

**Computational Thermo Fluid Dynamics Book Review:**

Combining previously unconnected computational methods, this monograph discusses the latest basic schemes and algorithms for the solution of fluid, heat and mass transfer problems coupled with electrodynamics. It presents the necessary mathematical background of computational thermo-fluid dynamics, the numerical implementation and the application to real-world problems. Particular emphasis is placed throughout on the use of electromagnetic fields to control the heat, mass and fluid flows in melts and on phase change phenomena during the solidification of pure materials and binary alloys. However, the book provides much more than formalisms and algorithms; it also stresses the importance of good, feasible and workable models to understand complex systems, and develops these in detail. Bringing computational fluid dynamics, thermodynamics and electrodynamics together, this is a useful source for materials scientists, PhD students, solid state physicists, process engineers and mechanical engineers, as well as lecturers in mechanical engineering.
