Dead Gallery

Want. It. All.

The Deadringer Classic remains the gold standard for skull rings. There is none finer, and i truly don’t think a finer skull ring is possible; but the thing that pleases me is that they’re keeping up that incredibly high artistic standard, AND they’re adding new stuff, AND they have a site that does justice to the product. So many vendors have great stuff ill-represent on their web sites; Deadringer has a site that kicks ass.

Evidently they also have some new stuff due out in the next few weeks so I’ll be watching.

Keep it up, Mark and Steve.

Life on the Ocean Wave

No idea why I’m still awake. I even took a sleeping pill and yet, 2:15, i’m fuckin’ around on line, listenin’ to Horslips and looking for a decent image their logo to make a t-shirt from; reading song lyrics, tryin’ to figure out sometihng to write about. And i just happened to stumble on a […]

No idea why I’m still awake. I even took a sleeping pill and yet, 2:15, i’m fuckin’ around on line, listenin’ to Horslips and looking for a decent image their logo to make a t-shirt from; reading song lyrics, tryin’ to figure out sometihng to write about.

And i just happened to stumble on a video of something I’ve been looking for for two or three years.

I wrote about it recently – tattoo flash I want for a backpiece. An image originally drawn by an artist in long beach, CA (Where my parents grew up), in a shop on the Long Beach Pike.

I was looking at some video on some site someplace and there it was; a quick pan-and-fade, not a complete image, and very small. But there it was.

It isn’t enough to give my tattooist to show him what I want; even though we’ll be re-interpreting the thing, i need it all and in enough resolution to print well. That’ll come later when I get the DVD sometimes this fall. But it’s enough for me. It’s enough to tell me, yeah, that image that grabbed me back then when i found it, it still grabs me the exact same way today.

These are crappy screen grabs, color’s washed out and they’re small; but they’ll do.

Thus, Life on the Ocean Wave:

A life on the ocean wave,
A-home on the rolling deep!
Where the scater’d waters rave,
And the winds their revels keep.
Like an eagle caged I pine
On this dull, unchanging shore.
Oh give me the flashing brine,
The spray and the tempest’s roar.

A life on the ocean wave,
A-home on the rolling deep!
Where the scater’d waters rave
And the winds their revels keep,
The winds,….. the winds…
The winds their revels…keep.

Once more on the deck I stand,
Of my own swift, gliding craft.
Set sail, farewell to land,
The gale follows fair abaft.
We shoot thro’ the sparkling foam,
Like an ocean bird set free.
Like the ocean bird, our home,
We’ll find far out on the sea.

The land is no longer in view,
The clouds have begun to frown.
But with a stout vessel and crew,
We’ll say : Let the storm come down!
And the song of our heart shall be,
While the winds and waters lave:
A life on the heaving sea,
A-home on the bounding wave!

Yeah. I think it’s still working for me. Now I know, and I just have to wait for release of the DVD. And then it’s all time and pain and money.

Creed Compass Cross

I’m lucky I don’t live near where Tony Creed works and sells. Not only would I always be hangin’ out at his studio ’cause I like watching jewelers work (and cause he’s fuckin’ cool), but I’d be in hock to my eyeballs because I’d be buyin’ one o’ everything he makes. This is the current […]

This is the current object of lust:

My Compass Ring

Thing is, i’m not a christian, so as a general rule I don’t wear crosses. Same as I don’t wear hindu or muslim or jewish buddhist or any other strictly religious symbols. But I do make exceptions; I used to wear a celtic cross dangle on my earring, and I have a Voudou veve pendant that speaks to me as a sort of diver’s lucky talisman. I won’t tattoo such symbols on me, but with jewelry, once in a while, I’ll go with it. I’ve never really wanted a cross ring, and as much as I like, for example, the german Iron Cross, I don’t have much with that symbol on it either (maybe one or two shirts).

This one though – i dunno. It just works. Maybe it’s just that FTW quality that all of Tony’s work has.

Damn, I need to get me another job just to fund my silver habit. This is worse than drugs.

large, angry rat

Ever have that feeling, like there’s a large, angry rat inside your skull and it’s trying to tear it’s way out?

You know, like it started below and behind your left ear, and it’s making it’s way toward your left eyeball?

No? Well I can’t recommend it.

I am now in day three of a a migraine that feels pretty much like that. And I’m over the part where having an excuse to take percodan mid-day is a fun novelty. I’ve over the ‘i’ll just go to bed and sleep this off’ feeling. I’m now on the to the fuck you fuck you part where I’m on a hair-trigger and get mad if you even think about looking at me funny, and where I want to take a mallet to my own head to MAKE THE GODDAMNED RAT STOP.

Which is to say I’m not particularly chipper just now.

Someone get me some more ice. And some fresh percodan.

On the other hand, I’m havin’ a great conversation with the cats from Skinny Dog about how they make jewelry with modern CAD/CAM technology. I should have a better post about them up soon.

Fist fulla Elvis

In my never-ending quest to cover my entire body – or at least my entire hands – with silver, I’ve acquired a couple more rings. And again, these are due to the generosity and genius of my friend Julian Lamb of Ruby Crush; Julian, I hope you’re selling some of these, because I love them. […]

In my never-ending quest to cover my entire body – or at least my entire hands – with silver, I’ve acquired a couple more rings.

And again, these are due to the generosity and genius of my friend Julian Lamb of Ruby Crush; Julian, I hope you’re selling some of these, because I love them.

So first, this one – which is mine all mine – and then the other, which, alas, I must give back.

Crush Hand

This is the big brother to my first Ruby Crush ring, and like that, it is a thing of exquisite workmanship. Julian’s a true artist. This one, though, is special. Not just special as in ‘it looks like a wild screaming lunatic’, though it does, and that alone makes it stand out in a field of crazy-lookin’ silver skulls. But it’s also special in that Julian – again, a gesture of generosity – carved my name into the skull in elegant old-english characters. I don’t think the photos above really do it justice, it’s hard to photograph silver with a little hand-held digital snapshot camera. The lettering, though, is just stunning. I’m not sure if he did this by hand, or if he used some sort of stamp, but whatever he did, it looks great. Honestly, I’ve not even worn this ring though I’ve hard it nearly a month. It somehow seems too good to wear and fuck up. Because that’s who I am, as soon as I put it on, it’s gonna take abuse.

Julian’s a truly gifted man; I’m hoping some of you skull collectors order pieces from him. He’s also a hell of a nice guy.

But wait, there’s more.

You may notice some adverts here and there around the m’sphere. Which ain’t exactly piracy, but you know, you do what ‘ya gotta. I’m tryin’ this out after helping a hot and lovely friend research ads. They may not stay, we’ll see what i get in the way of filthy lucre.

Waterfall pavement shimmering
Sunshine washes everything
A basket of light, I am trusting
To water the lawn is a wondrous thing

If I could have it this way I know I’d
I’d wanna live where it’s like today
I’d wanna live where it’s always this way
I wanna live where it’s always Saturday

A chorus of laughter fills the air
Everyone’s going everywhere
So many choices it’s not fair
I hop in the car and I just sit there

I don’t need, need to think about how much I
I wanna live where it’s all the same
I wanna live where it’s all just like today
I wanna live where it’s always Saturday

In the shops are shining things
I can I can see them glittering
I wish that I could buy them all
I wish I lived in a shopping mall

Shady back yard afternoon
Summer clothes and tennis shoes
When the light begins to fade
A porch swing creaks with lemonade…

A shower of whispers glow and bloom
Late night movie fills the room
Streetlights twinkling like dew
I close my eyes, it ends too soon

All in dreams, I can dream now oh how I
I wanna live where it’s like today
I wanna live where it’s always this way
I wanna live where it’s always Saturday

Always Saturday, Guadalcanal Diary
