The mice will play

Oh hell I just looked at flickr’s home page to make sure I’d spelled that right (or in context anyway), and found the most mouth-watering picture of sushi. I was about to write about how I can’t concentrate on blogging, but now I can’t even think of anything but sushi. My mouth is watering. Is it lunchtime yet?

Why yes, my middle name is pavlov. Why do you ask?

In any case, I just noticed that my boss is gone this week. Not that having my boss here is a problem, he’s a fine guy, a decent boss, and basically leaves me alone to get my work done my own way on my own schedule.

This isn’t my completely-tattooed Über-boss, Jeff. This is my actual manager, Steve who’s gone. Jeff, well, included in those pictures I’ve scanned are ones of Jeff bare-ass naked and getting his septum pierced by Fakir. So I don’t care if Jeff’s around.

But I like it when my boss is on vacation. There’s a sense of freedom. The office is quiet. People come to me if there’s an issue, so I can get stuff fixed faster without the boss-in-the-loop factor.

18 months ago it was a week when my boss was gone, I wrote Wanton. I won’t say I can do that again this week, but you know, I might be able to get my head around a couple things I’ve been working on.

We’ll see how my day looks later today, or tomorrow. I’ll crack open the folder full partly-done stories and see if I can get my head around one. Wish me luck.

  1. Seth and I went out ofr a sushi celebration Saturday night, and oh, G-d. Mackerel is in season.

There is nothing worse than the pasty stinking mess that is Mackerel out of season. I’ve never managed to wrap my head around wheh it’s good and when it isn’t, and I don’t have a chef who will give me a straight answer, so I just always order it and hope.

But when it’s in, when it’s fresh and firm and full of favor it is my absolute favorite sushi. Yum. Can’t get enough.

  2. We made sushi at the homestead on Saturday. My first time making honest to god sushi all by myself, no help from chef friends.

Usually we just end up having sashimi…OK, sashimi seems like kind of a fancy word for it, because actually usually just me and the boy sit down at the kitchen island with a knife and a bowl of soy sauce and a half pound slab of yellowfin and pig out.

But Saturday we did the whole deal, with the rice, doing handrolls, maki, inside-out rolls, everything.

It was glorious. The rice was perfect. The handrolls…fell apart.

No pictures. I was too busy for pictures. But next time.

I’m thinking of getting a Flikr account and doing a weekly “here’s what we cooked this weekend” series, like the Cooking At Home stuff they do on the Gothamist. It’d be fun, and it would make me cook something nice at least once a week. It’d also make me work on my presentation skills, which suck. I’m all about getting it TO the plate, but how it looks ON the plate is a trick I have yet to master.
