Brave New World in Gray

I know. I know. It’s scary in here. Different. It’s ok. Really. It’s the same old moronosphere with a new skin. Change is good, they say, and if it isn’t, change is still change. The real story is that I’ve just upgraded to Movable Type 4.1, and because the folks at six-apart feel the need […]

I know. I know. It’s scary in here. Different.

It’s ok. Really.

It’s the same old moronosphere with a new skin. Change is good, they say, and if it isn’t, change is still change.

The real story is that I’ve just upgraded to Movable Type 4.1, and because the folks at six-apart feel the need to change things completely, whle feeling no need at all to maintain backwards compatability, everything in my blog design had to be abandoned in order to convert.

It took me a really long time to feel ok with that. But I think I’m there. And I gotta say, this took a hell of a lot less time than trying to convert everything, even if the result is somewhat grim. I=n fact I managed to do this in between tasks today while waiting for builds to finish

Don’t worry, my logo, at least, will come back. I’m attached to it. I just have to figure out how these fucking widgets work.

  1. It looks like you need to hang some blinds, new carpet maybe, at least the paint is fresh. Definitely some accent pieces are necessary.
Work the widgets. We’ll be patient.

  2. I blinked, but then I kinda like it… Maybe a few pictures hung on the walls again and you’ll be home. Something depraved of course. Vaguely evil to fit a “Bad Daddy!” (I’m partial to a little color though…)

  3. Syl, teh switch is motivated by two things. One, I’m hoping to get better spam management, mt4 has some better options for captacha, registration, etc (none of which I’m using yet of course).

But the other is my core philosophy with software tools; stay current. I always have my computers at current rev, and try to keep all my tools updated. This can mean trouble if you’re too bleeding edge, but in general, it keeps stuff working. I kept looking at the new stuff in mt4 and going, wow, that sounds cool.

mt4 has features to handle non-blog web pages and community forums, and some really cool design concepts (things are really modular, you can change your templates around by dragging and dropping ‘widgets’).

The downside is you pretty much need to check your own design and start over with an import. I finally just gave in on that and stopped trying to bitch-slam MT into taking my old design.

Some bloggers who would like to register commenters now have great choices for how to do that, though you can also go with plain old systems as is.

My main issue now is that I can’t quite get my head around the new stylesheet system.
