Young Ace of Spades

Once again the fetching Miss Syl has pointed me to something that I can’t live without. 1. I wore out the tape I had from MTV in 87.
I killed the VHS version I bought a few years ago and I’m steadily on the way to wearing through my DVD sets.
Love love love the Young Ones…

  2. I love it when you’re jealous, CG.

Fredlet, I was all stoked thinking ‘fredlet loves motorhead?’, and then I realized you’re talking about the young ones, a show I never could get behind. It’s the motorhead element I was stoked about.

Miss Syl, you know I take it with no straw…

  3. The Young Ones rocked. Hence, fredlet rocks.

I’ve still got my old MTV VHS versions, too. I really need to buy the DVDs.

    We’re on different buses, fredlet
    But we’re both using petrol.

  4. Yeah, maybe it was the python comparisons that always got me; I was a python fan from the very first night it showed up on PBS. My friends were all saying ‘i don’t understand what they’re saying’ and ‘it’s stupid’ about python. Then when python hit, all sorts of other brit comedy turned up on us teevee – benny hill, young ones, etc. And they all got called ‘like monty python’. My friends all said of these shows ‘they’re much better than monty python’ and maybe just on principle, I hated them all, for not being compared to my favorite show.

I honestly can’t say I ever gave young ones much of a chance, I just remeber rolling my eyes and changing channels when it came on after monty python.

And you’re right, fredlet rocks. B^)

  5. God, Benny Hill? *No* one thought that was better than Python, unless they were an IDIOT. (Um, I hope I didn’t just insult some of your friends.) It’s SO annoying to me now that they’re replaying his shows on BBC America when they could be playing more recent, cutting-edge stuff.

In the UK, Benny Hill is sort of a national benchmark reference for lowest common denominator comedy. They don’t understand why it was shown for so long in America.

The Young Ones, on the other hand was very funny if you were in college in the 80s or followed british politics. It was pretty topical. And also each of the character represented one very familiar “type” you encountered if you were part of the “counterculture” community in college. Interspersed with that, it also ranked pretty high in gross out humor. It was odd; there’d be a joke you’d only get if you knew Chekov’s plays, and then there’d be a fart joke. Something about that combination, that you could stick both intellectual and low brow together, was just a nice combination.

A lot of now-famous comedians and actors appeared on the Young Ones before they were widely known. Jennifer Saunders, Emma Thompson, Hugh Laurie (“House”), Stephen Fry,…

  6. Benny Hill? *No* one thought that was better than Python

We were adolescent boys, so it’s not a surprise that some of my pals found BH to be more to thier taste than python was. They *got* BH, but then they were basically BH’s target audience.

But yeah, I sort of lumped Young Ones in with BH mentally as ‘one of those other british shows that are NOT PYTHON’.

  7. SIGH… Am I the only one in the universe who digs Python, digs Benny Hill (watched him WAAAAAY back), AND adores the Young Ones? Really?? Sheesh.
