Gabby Pahinui, Hi’ilawe

It’s fucking beautiful, and stopped me dead, absolutely swept away by that island feeling, that sense of time and place I get.

Hawaii makes me understand how one can have a love affair with a place that has the emotional and physical intensity one normally only feels for a person. And it’s the music that takes me there, to early mornings driving through dripping rain forest, to meals and drinks outside with the sound of the ocean, the warm breeze, the smell of exotic flowers and earthy decay.

The smell of hawaii – cane stubble burning, the murky scent of fermenting sugar cane, the red scent of the very soil. Sea and sweat and fruit and flowers.

I need to be back there. Now.

  1. I’m with you on this one. Went to Maui last year and was completely taken with the whole place.

I got to dive into the ocean again, which is always a good thing for me. This time though, when I dove under the waves I got to hear the whales singing. Magic.

The whole place is magic and energy to me. Upcountry to the beach. It changes and lives under your feet if you can be still enough to catch it.

Being near the ocean always feels like coming home to me, but Hawaii intensified that a millionfold.

  2. Hiromi, no, I’ve never lived there. Almost, a while back when there was a money-tap I could open any time and ‘office’ was anywhere I could get a network jack. But not quite. Yet from my first trip it seemed like home.

GirlieGrrrl, just wait ’til you visit Kauai or the Big Island. If Maui spoke to you that way, try the places that are a little closer to the soul of the place. Kauai calls me, I can hear it now.

  3. I tend to go to the Big Island, which is where my family is from. It’s totally the Land Where Time Stood Still, but in a good way – so peaceful, so quiet.

I need to go during mango season! I would kill for a Hawaiian mango!

  4. Yeah, the Big Island is where I’d choose to live, and the best diving, and the best of most of what I love about Hawaii. On the other hand, there’s something about teh way Kauai smells…
