I keep meaning to post a whole ting about my hawaii trip with photos but 1) i have no time and 2) i have so damned many photos to go through.

So here’s a sample set i like.

I was in the town of Hawi, northenmost town on the Big Island of Hawaii. This is King Kamehameha’s birthplace, and a sort of artsy enclave unlike the more touristy center of Kailua-Kona.

I was walking from a store that sold jewelry across the street to a fantastic tattoo shop I’ll post more about later (i only wish I’d had time to get tattooed). But i found this lizard (an anole, in Hawaiian, which is not the same as a gecko). I picked him up and we bonded; I could NOT get him to crawl off me and onto a nice safe branch. Seemed he was happier crawling up my arm to see the highest point.

  1. I love geckos, H. I love the song they sing in twighlight. They’re harder to catch though, fast and smart.

Bombshell, actually i already have a mo’o (a sort of mythic lizard from hawaiin mythology) on my other arm, though who knows, another may show up one ‘o these days. The hand tattoo says “H O L D – F A S T” but i’m also likely to wind up with more tattoos there. I’m making an appt to get more work on my right arm later this month, so we’ll see what winds up there.

Circe, I dunno, but by all means, tell me more.

  2. Awwwwww, baaaaayyyybeeeee lizard!

For some reason, I find reptiles baby-talkable. And I won’t even talk to *humans* in baby talk, mostly.

    That guy is tooooo cute.

Reminds me of this one summer when as a teenager I went camping in this big forest in the Northeastern US. In the early morning, we were walking around the woods near our campsite, and this tiny yellow tree frog suddenly appeared on my leg and climbed up me, and just didn’t want to let go. I walked around with him all morning, until we had to leave. The other teenage girls around me were completely grossed out, but I just love frogs and lizards and snakes. (Well, pet snakes, not those you accidentally come across in the wild, making rattling sounds.)

It was hard to let my little frog go–I still remember that, after all these years. There’s something that makes you feel so good about a wild creature “picking” you for a bonding moment. Bet it was hard to say goodbye to the little guy.
