…and a hocky game broke out

This right here is why i love hockey. What other sport would let this go on? We get a bunch of testosterone-laden, over-muscles goons get out on a playing field, work into a competitive frenzy, they we act like they’re suppose to just walk like it’s nothing when some joker makes a cheap shot. The modern NFL won’t even let players celebrate great plays anymore.

Not so the NHL. They let ’em work it out the old-fashioned way.

The thing that’s cool about this isn’t just that they’re all fighting. What’s cool is that the refs only stop the fights when it looks like the guy on th e bottom is beaten. If the combatants work it out and break up, the refs just let ’em go.

Here come the playoffs.

  1. That amuses me more than it probably should… I really like those refs! I think that’s a much more realistic way to handle in-game fighting than immediately pulling people apart; it lets the guys work off some of their agression. And besides, hockey guys are *mean*, and I’m pretty sure most refs avoid getting involved for the very reason that happens 1/3 into that video: nobody save another hockey player would want to be in a ring of those guys fighting! I love the music in the background too. Now I kinda want to go to a game… 😉

  2. Yeah! Go Sharp! Don’t *fucking* mess with Philly. Flyers! Flyers! Flyers!

Ahem. Sorry. In my genes. Philly born and bred.

What would have rocked even more is if the arena sound guy actually DID pipe in “Enter Sandman” while they fought.

The thing that’s the most incredibly delightful part of it is the unchecked joy with which the crowd is reacting to the fights. I saw this Desmond Morris special once called ‘The Human Animal” and one of the episodes was on aggression and anger. They showed this one festival in Italy where each town in the region hosts a particular “team” for this very stylized event…can’t remember the deal, it had something to do with horses…but he was talking about how the crowd was able to channel all their aggression into the event through ‘representative warfare,” rather than have to fight each other. By putting all their own desire to fight and kill and win into their town’s team, it’s a way to release the aggression they have pent up, and it keeps their individual need to fight at bay and lowers the crime rate overall. It’s an interesting theory. People often worry that if kids or others witness violence that they will become more violent themselves individually, so it’s now discouraged in sports and other entertainment venues. The theory is seeing fights in sports will send the message, “It’s okay to fight.” But perhaps if we had MORE fighting in sports, there would be less voilence overall.

  3. Man I really miss playing. I need to get back onto the ice again soon. Thanks for the reminder. Peace.

  4. This is so fucked but I was actually at that game… and the video doesn’t do it justice! Philly fans may be rough but they didn’t call the Flyers the “Broad St. Bullies” for nothing. Personally, I think we need to go back to the time of “.. an eye for an eye”. But then again, I’m an Italian chick from South Philly so I tend to be freaky that way!
