So many blogs, so little time

It seems the more I wander around the blogosphere the more I add to the list of blogs I like and want to follow. And of course I can’t even begin to keep up.

I mean, there are the ones I always track. Circe, Doxy, who doesn’t update anywhere near enough, Trance, Brother Ray, Gregg P and Rachel, Julie and Fredlet. But these people are all friends, even if I’ve only met a couple of them in the (ahem) flesh.

But there are so many more. Brilliant political blogs like Wonkette and Koz, sex bloggers like Erosblog. Techno blogs like BoingBoing and Slashdot (Which are not really blogs but they’re bloglike).

And then the other half-dozen or so I run across links to every day. I keep collecting them in my link-farm (on the side panel of this blog), but it gets longer and longer and eventually becomes un-managable and I have to prune it now and then.

I can’t keep up even with the ones I try to read now. And I can’t keep collecting more.

It’s frustrating. I’m only now starting to see the value in RSS aggregators which let you track many blogs and feeds in one place, though I’m not completely sure they’ll solve the problem. I’m going to install NetNewsWire and try it though. It also helps that myYahoo is starting to support RSS headline feeds; I can get headlines from Wonkette, Slashdot, and BoingBoing there. But still I’m left with more reading than I can reasonably do in a day when I also have to manage work, family, and want to fit it my own blogging, fiction writing, and some on-line social activity. I’ve mostly given up non-essential TV (and by essential I mean anything on HBO and maybe four other shows, all TiVo’d and watched on my own schedule), and I’m having a hard time getting much old-fashioned book reading in.

There’s some much good shit out there in blogland. But there’s just so much overall, and typically the bulk of it’s not so great.

I have a few new favorites though. Alexa, a NY City escort, came to me via a link from someplace like Eros; I like her blog, though it’s inexplicably named nyhotties. I also just noticed that Peter Throckmorton’s back at Diary of a Slut. Not a read for the faint of heart; his latest includes a fisting scene. But a damned good read. There’s also Brandon’s Contemporary Insanity, a funny commentary on politics and pop culture, and the delightful Spanking Art which is just what it sounds like — art, with spanking.

There’s the problem though. I keep picking up these new favorites. There are always more good ones out there even if you have to wade though more are more teen angst.

I have to say — for all the time it takes up, for all that I dismissed the idea and self-indulgent nonsense, I’m pleased and impressed by this whole movement, and I’m glad I’m part of it. If only there were more hours in a day, or if I could figure out how to get paid for reading and writing blogs…

  1. Karl Elvis, you rule.

I had to temporarily remove you from my blog roll a few weeks back when I was submitting my site to various advertising programs due to your perverted writings 😉 but you’re back now, and there you’ll stay.

    Yeah, I’m a sellout. But that’s life. 🙂

I’m having the opposite problem: I don’t frequent enough blogs to have a decent blogroll, and it’s been tough trying to avoid the obvious ones (Wonkette and Kos), and also avoiding the ones that would make me look like an ass-kisser. (Wil Wheaton) Of course, I’m probably being too anal retentive about it, but my seal of approval is a hot commodity demanded by dozens. So it’s important to me. 🙂

  2. I started with that attitude, but then realized it tends to be reciprocal (I link you, you like me, we’re an incestuous family) and just said — what the fuck. Plus then I have a bookmark list of blogs I wanted to remember.

  3. True. I think I have my blogroll concept now, though: blogs that I stumbled into on my own via sources other than blogrolls. Yours, for instance, was found through Orkut. (obviously) as was TranceJen’s. I’m keeping an eye peeled for others now.
