I said “they broke the mold” to someone earlier tonight and it sparked one of those where the hell did I hear that song lyric searches.

After quite a while poking around in the memory banks, and then some googling, I give you Axegrinder by one of my all time favorite bands, the Hoodoo Gurus:

My edge is keen and I’ve honed my skill.
I’ve got nerves of steel and an iron will.
My skin is bronze, my trim is chrome,
Climb aboard – I’ll drive you home.
I’m a silver – tongued devil with a heart of gold,
When I was made they broke the mold.
My blood runs hot, like molten lead,
Pump you full – I’m gonna knock you dead.

I don’t mince words, I spit’em out.
I won’t leave room for any doubt.
Get to the point, stop splitting hairs
That ain’t getting either of us anywhere.
Sometimes it’s better to be blunt
But is this some kind of publicity stunt?
So far you’ve whet my appetite,
Do you wanna grind with me tonight?

Axegrinder. I’m not famous for my tact.
Axegrinder. I’ve gotta sharpen up my act.
Axegrinder. Try and see things through my eyes.
Everything and everyone gets cut back down to size.

On the brink of who knows what?
We’ve gotta strike while the iron’s hot.
l can hold your hand, try to guide you through
But I can’t make your moves for you.
Swing my blade – that’s how it’s done.
Don’t stop me now, I’ve only just begun.
I was told when I was young
I wouldn’t work in an iron lung.
Now I’ve learned a trick of two.
I’m working up a sweat for you.

  1. How can you forget the Gurus, DN?

They actually have a new(ish) album out though I think you still have to order it from Oz – Mach Shau it’s called. It ain’t bad. I wish they’d tour again, they are awesome live, though I gave a significant percentage of the hearing in my left ear to them the last time I saw ’em. Also walked out of that show with cigraette burns on my arm, and lipstick all over my face, both courtesy of the same girl.

That song – which is great, though not from one of the gurus best albums – is really, really me.

  2. Are you shitting me????
I didnt know anyone knew this band existed but me?….you rock !!
I bought the album called KINKY way way back in the day when i was a young scallywag ( about 1991 ) and although other things have succumed to being skint and selling of parts of my older cd collection i always always kept hold of kinky as its a top album that still gets played lots…..but i never seen or heard about them sinse so presumed they were a one album wonder….a bit like another album i have by a band called “The Havalinas”…any one know what happened to them?

I shall be seeking other Hoodoo’s albums asap
    Cheers bud
Hope you got my skull ring link email?

  3. Back in the 80’s, we saw the Hoodoo Gurus walking down Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras (we’d seen them play in a club that weekend so we recognized them). A year or so later we saw one of their music videos which included footage of them walking down Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras. I’ve looked and looked for myself in the video, but they must have intentionally edited me out. Bastards.

For the life of me, though, I can’t remember a damn thing about what they sound like. Big on college radio is all I remember.

  4. I’ll go larn Dave Faulkner a thing or three, Ray. You should be in that video.

Now, I’m gonna have to figure out which video that was…

As to what they sound like – just tossed you a link to download a couple things, but they’re basically sixtes garage rock meets 80’s rock/pop. Rougher and louder live than on record (incredibly loud, generally).

  5. OK, Karl fixed me up with some mp3s to jog my memory, and now I remember.

“Like Wow Wipeout” was a HUGE fucking deal in my crowd of radio geek friends.

    Psychedelic surf-mosh wonderfulness.

Reminds me of the Lime Spiders, “Slave Girl”. Same era, same out-of-control drunken furniture-breaking mayhem.

I gotta get some more of this. I need more mayhem in my life right now.

  6. Being a love slave rocks 🙂 And we still need to sandwich you, KE.
Ahem. Don’t have to order Mach Schau from Oz, but download from Russia.

The album is costing…$1.24 with 192 bit encoding.
Be forewarned: They may still say it’s illegal.
