Fear and Loathing in Startup Land
Bill Gurley of Benchmark Capital: Existing cash flow is key, ’cause you ain’t getting any more from anywhere else any time soon: Gurley also says for companies to expect “across-the-board reductions” in valuations, and a tough market for raising money – “Basically, the cost of capital is going way up.” Hedge funds are probably out [...]
Spam drought
So apparently I am not the only person who can’t get into their Gmail account. Google says the outage is affecting “a subset” of their users. Like, 10%? 98%? Can I get a Venn diagram?
Ken Kennedy
Rice CS professor Ken Kennedy dead at 61. My time at Rice during the 80′s was an exciting time in computer science, with Comp Sci finally coming into its own as a department distinct from mathematical sciences or electrical engineering. I didn’t graduate from Tulane, but I went to what is roughly its equivalent in Texas, Rice University. Can you imagine a world in which Rice had to permanently dismantle its engineering departments? [...]

This was the only thing keeping me from taking my PC outside and releasing some tension with a sledgehammer. And since I discovered this site, my PC has been blue-screening every [...]
Blog tinkering
When I get snatches of time, I’m working on changing the layout of this site. If you see anything that looks broken, let me know (especially if you know how to fix it). I already know that the three columns are different lengths in Firefox; tell me how to fix it and I’ll send you [...]
Why I Love Apple
Even though I don’t own any of their products, I love the idea of Apple. A glorious skunkworks tale. The secret to programming is not intelligence, though of course that helps. It is not hard work or experience, though they help, too. The secret to programming is having smart friends.
