Lower Ninth photos...Jesus...
Harlan sends a link to a Flickr series of about 70 photos taken in the parts of the Lower Ninth Ward that were still closed when Gina and I were there last month. These were all taken in the past few days.
You have not seen pictures like this anywhere.
Please go through all of them (they get worse as you work your way through the set) so you can understand what it's like there.
If you're an Austinite, and you want to put it in a local perspective, squint your eyes and pretend that those homes are in East Central Austin. Pretend that every building from I-35 to Airport, and from MLK down to the river, is squashed flat, and all the people are gone, living in exile in Mississippi and Tennessee and Oklahoma. That's the scale of the disaster just in the Lower Ninth.

Christ.
The only thing that stops it from looking like a bombed-out war zone is the lack of char. Other than that...
That's fucking nightmarish.

Another body was found in this neighborhood just yesterday (Dec 29th) in the 1600 block of Tennessee St. T/P story link:

Sad part is it's the returning family members that are finding them these days, one or two at a time, long after rescue/recovery teams finished their operations.

I keep looking for friends' houses. I can't see any landmarks other than the brdige in these pix. My friend Sara Woodin used to live right across from Holy Cross and her mom lived next door. Mike West and a bunch of musicians used to live in a half-gutted house in the bend where the Industrial Canal meets the river. And there was another acquaintance who lived a few doors up from them.
Our government is shit. What kind of country lets its people drown and starve, much less rot for four months until their relatives dig them out? And all the while, Asswipe Bush is holding forth about aiding the non-voting tsunami survivors, who are safely half a planet away. It's not that we shouldn't help them or that they uffered less. It's that we are HERE and this is OUR government.
Oh, that's right, I forgot: we didn't elect them; they stole the election.
Fucking criminals.
