Hubig's Pies!

Ruth's Chris are all traitors. Emeril might be a deserter. Crystal hot sauce may or may not be cast aside like the bottle of Vichy Water at the end of Casablanca.

But Hubig's Pies are back, baby, baked right on Dauphine Street. They should hit the stores Monday.

This article from the Washington Post details the gigantic pile of misery that the Small Business Administration has been inflicting on New Orleans businesses post-Katrina, but the sharp-eyed dude at Da Po' Blog also noticed that it announces that Hubig's is back on-line, at least partially, through state loans and hard work.

Once again, New Orleanians are doing it for themselves. Secede and join OPEC; it sounds better and better.

But I will have my stash of Hubig's pies to go with my thermos of coffee, before dawn on Fat Tuesday, as I babysit the ladders on St. Charles. And life will be good and normal for that little quiet moment.

Thanks for the good news! If the krewes are smart, they'll buy and toss a lot of local products, like Hubig's Pies. Heck, who wouldn't prefer a great pie to a crappy string of beads??

Yeah! I'll take a Hubig's pie over a moon pie any day.

Actually, I was wondering if somebody could come up with a Moon Pie MRE. At least for Krewe du Vieux to throw.

What good news! Ironically enough, I found your blog by doing a search for Hubig's pies and spent the better part of yesterday reading the rest of your site with sadness and anger and all the usual emotions of a fellow ex-Yat. Your candor and wit could only come from someone who grew up in New Orleans and "gets it". Thank you.

Thanks, Tim.

There are a bunch of New Orleans bloggers over in my blogroll on the right-hand side there that get it too. You should check 'em out.

The barkeep at Johnny White's told me he stopped by there last week to try to buy some, and they just loaded him up with about 15 or so. They wouldn't let him pay, they just told him to tell everybody that "we're back".

That's New Orleans.

I'm driving in from Houston for the first weekend of Carnival just to get some of those pies! ... Well, maybe that's not the only reason, but it's a big one!
