Cafe VVD
One of my favorite rollergirls (I can't say my favorite, obviously, 'cause that would get me in heaps of trouble, but definitely in like the top three), Victoria von Doom, has filled a void on Magazine Street by opening the only real coffee shop in the vicinity of Magazine & Napoleon.
Cafe Bayard is a cozy little place nestled between Miss Mae's and Casamento's, with great coffee and espresso, and now pastries and sandwiches and I think wifi too.
I plan on spending a lot of quality time there, 'cause the whole telecommuting from home thing is starting to make me a little nutty. All you Boulignites should stop by and support a new local business the way I know you like to.

What are the hours?
If nothing else we should be able to pick up city wifi in there.
Boulignites?

Faubourg Bouligny is an old name for this part of Uptown.
Boulignites is a word I made up, probably inadvisably.

Bouligny is an accurate name for this part of town, dude. Boulignite, I'm not so sure about. We'll have to meet there some time.

Boulignian?
Oh, and right now my wife is on the internets, using the Googles (going through the tubes) searching for deals on skates and pads, so she can try out for the BERG on Tuesday.
I blame you.

I've been there several times since they've opened. The square at the corner of Napoleon and Magazine is a pleasing spectacle as viewed through the front window there. They seem to have a problem keeping fresh ice on hand for some reason though.

Indeed it is. Right now I'm watching some kids from one of the local schools run laps around the block for PE. (Not sure which school...lessee, mixed gender, mixed race, no uniforms...nope, not coming to me.)
It brings back memories of the old Franklin, running laps over cracked sidewalks and having to vault the trash can lids outside the cafeteria on trash day.
It's also cute watching a couple of the less-fit kids (ok, they're fat) cutting through the basketball court on the corner and climbing the fence to cut a few yards out of their run. This instinct will serve them well later in their professional lives. Note how I appear to be working while I am in fact sitting in a coffee shop blogging about staring out the window, and it counts as work because I'm using the company laptop to do it.
(Lest anybody from work read this: calm down, I'm running webui tests in the background and waiting for the Ukrainians to release the merge lock.)

Ash: You'll be disappointed to know that despite what the "Rollergirl" reality show on A&E implied, roller girls are not constantly macking on each other's spouses. You do get to go their parties, though, in return for which you have to spend two or three nights a week as a single parent. (Which we spend eating meat, since Gina's a vegetarian.)

So, how do you say it? BOO-lin-ee? Would be way cool is Mrs. Perfesser ended up a BERG. Golly, you'd think we'd be past "try-outs" by this age? Okay, *that* age. I'm definitely past try-outs.
You guys try not to work too hard. ;)

Well I can't wait for Betts to try out for the BERG... I could use a few free nights every week.

And they close at midnight, or thereabouts, stopped in tonight.
It should do for a new math homework location as long as it doesn't get too crowded.

I'm glad for the headsup on the new spot. You're not far, though, from Fuel and Urban Cup, both of which I've enjoyed. Anything sinister about them that should make me stay away? I do like spreading the coffee money around to different spots, but only when I know they're not tied in with the corporate crap.

I LOVE that place! I found it during Bachhus this year and I FELL IN LOVE! I got the best cinnamon latte...mmm. And the girl that served me was one the coolest chicks.
Glad you found the place!

HH, I like Fuel. I've been to Urban Cup three times, though, and each time I experienced a comical level of bad service. I mean the kind where you go past annoyed and straight to laughing out loud and shaking your head on the way out the door.
Hey, Jess. Yeah, it's a good place. And I saw on your LJ where your grandmother said it used to be a barbershop and I was thinking exactly the same thing yesterday.

Ray, I went to Bayard Thursday on your rec and liked it a lot. I drink tea rather than coffee (no reason other than I never matured enough to like coffee), and they have a great selection. Strangely, I've always had decent service at Urban Cup, actually more enthusiastic than Fuel, but I like them both. I hate to think of businesses pissing it away by not paying attention. My wife is addicted to bubble tea, and Jay's near our house is on at least its 3rd owner, and he reeeeally thinks he's doing you a favor if he fixes you something to drink (you'll have to get him out of his car to do it). Pitiful.

Cafe Bayard now has an ice machine. All is well.
