Baseball photos

A couple of photos sent by my Uncle John. The first is of him and my grandfather presenting a Jimmy Fund check to Ted Williams. Taken next to the Red Sox dugout at Fenway right before a night game against the Yankees, September, 1954.

My grandfather and uncle with Ted Williams

The second picture was taken right after World War II. Nobody knows who the sailor on the right is, but the guy on the left in the Air Force uniform is my great uncle Billy. The guy in the middle is some dude who used to play for the Yankees. I think he, like, hit a lot of home runs or something.

I thought the guy in the middle played for the Red Sox?

Nah, you're thinking of Johnny Damon. This must be somebody else.

Great pictures! On September 21 1956, Mantle hit his 51st in Fenway. It was a night game and I watching on TV in RI at home. The ball hit near the top of the wall in centerfield. The next day my Uncle George took me on a train to my first baseball game ever at Fenway. The mark of the ball was still visible on the wall from the first baseline seats we had. We were both Yankee fans in the middle of Red Sox country.

Fenway is the holiest of holy shrines.

I love those memorable games. We saw Manny Ramirez hit his 20th grand slam against the Rangers in 2005, and our whole section was full of Red Sox fans. Not just wannabes, either, but a whole section of New England transplants.

So Rhode Island Yankee fans, huh? Connecticut is usually as far up as we let you people. I hope you had all your passports and visas in order.

Hey, I was introduced to baseball by my very funny Uncle and Godfather George, my mother's brother. He and my Uncle Sam got into many Red Sox-Yankee shouting matches. We sat in my grandmother's basement and listened on the radio to Mel Allen and Red Barber. It was way better than any baseball on TV now. These people were masters of holding your attention. The commentators have video now and most can't match the radio people by a long shot.

A friend of a friend obtained this Johnny Damon autograph at the A's fan appreciation day in 2001. It is 100% authentic. Yankee fans beware:

Yankees Suck
