One year ago.

5:40am: Levee break in Lakeview
...
For perspective, the nola.com report would put almost everything on this map under still-rising water.

And while I'm reading this, somebody on MSNBC just said "As cleanup begins in New Orleans, all eyes turn to Mississippi". Christ, don't they read the fucking papers?

10:13: Baton Rouge update and family status

11:24: Times-Picayune evacuating

11:45: WWL update link

4:36pm: Some neighborhood updates and governor's news conference

5:11: Bodies

6:05: God DAMN it!

Shepherd Smith has been in New Orleans for two days now. Will somebody please tell him that Louisiana doesn't have COUNTIES, it has PARISHES.

Plaquemines PARISH.

Orleans PARISH.

Jefferson PARISH.

Not county. Parish. Say it with me. P-p-p-parish.

6:29: Thank you

Shep just said "reports coming in from Plaquemines Count...er, Plaquemines Parish...".

8:27: 17th Street: Levee repair has failed, pumps have failed
...
Right now I feel exactly the same way I felt on the afternoon of 9/11. Horror. Grief. Numbness. Completely at a loss of what to do.

The only difference is that on 9/11, the whole world felt the way I did. Tonight, I feel very alone. I drove out to get some dinner, and the radio was playing an Astros game. Conservative radio hosts were talking about Iraq. There was some financial advice show on...some guy is upside-down on his car payments. The guys at the sandwich shop were half-watching CNN and half talking about Longhorn football. It's just like TV to them. They don't care. They watch, but they don't care. Not really.

...

Tomorrow I get to go to work and hang out with people for whom the most important thing in the world is the next goddamn software release, and I am overwhelmed with grief for my city.

...

I have nothing but despair to give. I should stop blogging.

I get the feeling we'll be having these kinds of flashbacks daily for the next month.

Posted by: jeffrey at August 30, 2006 9:36 AM

I'm sure I'll get bored with it before then.

FOX’s Smith said "County". Oh my God. The sky has fallen. The end is near. Can't sleep tonight…. Trust me, CNN’s Kyra Phillips had a restless night also.

Listened to any liberal talks shows last night Ray as they continue to kiss the asses of the 201 House Democrats who voted against our 12 Billion Dollars of offshore revenue sharing. Sure, "W" would veto it but if only half of these little bi-partisan creeps would come around, the veto could be over ridden?

Instead, we have Mary in the Senate playing with our lives and a couple of hundred million a year. Dude, that's where the problem is.

"Horror", "grief", "numbness" because a Fox reporter called us counties????

You should feel the horror, grief and numbness felt by the CNN execs when they see the Nielson's each month!

I'm certainly glad that you didn't stop blogging. I was lucky. My boss was very tolerant and just let me watch the NOLA news on my computer, for a very long time (weeks? months? I'm not sure), as long as I got my work done.

And I didn't take it that the "horror" and "grief" and "numbness" had as much to do with Shepard Smith (what the hell happened to him?) as it did with the flood. JMHO.

Great flashback, Ray.

Dangle: This seems like an odd time to go off on one of your wingnut rants. Did you see how bored your boy W was during the ceremony at the Cathedral. He needs ritalin.

Posted by: Adrastos at August 30, 2006 1:21 PM

Wow, afraid to say "right wing" rants?????
If you think this is bad, go check out Gentilly Girl, Mark (The blogger formerly known as Markus)and a couple other NOLAs.

Scroll down and check their previous posts.

There is no way in freakin hell that you all can be this ignorant. Especially when C.Ray gets it. Jr in St, Bernard gets it. Donald "Freakin " Trump gets it.

And for those who want to label out of town bloggers who want to showcase New Orleans "Carpetbaggers"...perhaps they get it too.

To call what I say is a "wingnut" rant? What's a "wingnut" and where is the rant? Would you like me to e-mail you some recent rants??????

They are easy to find and this ain't one of them.

I swear I heard about the 17th st. canal levee break on wwl monday night. It's all a blur, though, and I totally missed the first week of online media coverage.

Anyone else remember timelines? I remember harry lee got on wwl tuesday or wednesday morning asking anyone with a flat boat to get to the sams on airline highway...

Posted by: candice at August 30, 2006 5:49 PM

Yeah, I blogged about reports of the Lakeview breach on the afternoon of the 29th, here, but Tuesday morning is when enough details started coming out in the media that I got really really scared.

Posted by: Ray at August 30, 2006 6:03 PM

Down, Dangle.
