I’m trying to help a non-techie windows user ftp upload a bunch of data to my server for safe storage.

Trouble is, when I think ftp, I think unix/macos command line (the way I do it):

     [motorhead:~] kmac% ncftp -u username hostname.com

So I need to direct said user to a good, easy to use windows tool/method.

It’s been six years since I’ve touched a windows machine. I have no idea what to set her up with.

Help a brutha out, windows geeks.

  1. Use filezilla. Easy and free.

  2. CuteFTP

    WSFTP

    c:/ > ftp http://ftp.site.name.net
    username
    password
    get filename.filetype

  3. I’ve been using a copy of FTP Commander. Got it from http://www.internet-soft.com/software-download.htm, and it lets you save several server settings at one time. Just because I had like, 5 servers I had loaded stuff into.

  4. FTP Commander and CuteFTP are highly recommended (Why the heck didn’t you let me know FTP was an option?). The missus has used CuteFTP for a bit–it’s pretty straight-forward.

To bring things back down, on the Mac side, RBrowser Lite (a freebie) is pretty easy to work with–a nice step beyond Fetch.

  5. Fetch is a reallly easy ftp client to use for non-tech people. I don’t know if they make a PC version, though.

  6. I just don’t have much to say recently. Such is life. I’ve basically been doing nothing. Basically nothing seems worth bothering with. Oh well.
