I pretty much spent today working on Apache.
(this entry copied from my blogspot blog)
This is one of those deals where the thing I’m doing for work just happens to line up with something of my own; getting better 404 error pages up on Seth’s machine (where moronosphere has been hosted). He just had a root page that said something about the machine being dead; I wanted to get it responding to the specific domains with custom 404 errors.
At work, I’m trying to get our documentation, which is managed in perforce, to automatically update a web page on check-ins. So I was wrasslin’ with a problem somewhere between perforce view specs and apache virtual server cgi configurations.
The problem in both cases – syntax errors in the apache config file. Of course.
The end result is, I now know quite a lot more about apache than I did this morning. Which wasn’t my goal for the day, but you know, I got two problems solved (my intern can now debug her cgi scripts, and circe’s site now has a smart-alec 404 page as a place-holder, and karlelvis.com has my forward page, until we get MT up and running.
Yeah, this is suddenly geek-blog. I’m sorry, I’d rather is was sex-blog or writer-blog, but we’ll get to that.
Briar.com, Seth’s machine, is coming back together. I installed Mutt today (wow, installing stuff from the Slackware Linux install cd is easy; Linux has come a long way since I last set up a linux machine), and we’ve got most of the rest of what we need. I hope by tomorrow or the next day to be able to drop MT in place and start looking for missing perl packages. No, I didn’t need mutt to get this to work, but I like mutt, it’s my favorite mailer.
Once I have that going, I can try unpacking my blog backups and see what I have; I have up through july 17 or so, but I’ve not verified that it loads into mySQL.
Seth shipped off the dead drive today. Fingers crossed, maybe we’ll get everything up ’til the failure (quickly, sacrifice something tender and sweet to the disk drive gods, and while we’re at it, sacrifice something tender and sweet, (and semi-virginal) to me). It’ll be five to seven days to get word back on what’s been recovered, so I’m betting on next week to get an answer. Which is fine if the answer is yeah we got it, but less fine if the answer is spelled S-O-L.
It was a weird weekend. I worked so hard on getting my home office organized saturday that I wrenched something in my back; I had people over for music and actually didn’t drink (which is normally what I do while my friends are playing, one shot for them, two for me). Sunday was a weird odyssey of technogeekery and flashback. Bad morning, afternoon of face down in the computer, and an evening that started bad but ended ok.
I’m feeling out of touch with the world, though. Even with this blog here, and forwards coming from the old one, there’s a feeling of being cut off. There’s an odd feeling like people I’m talking to are not talking back, like things are going on around me I’m just slightly out of phase with. I feel like drinking, but don’t want my senses dulled or my reactions slowed. I have a rare night alone tomorrow, and I’m looking forward to being in a quiet house and not doing anything at all but maybe catching up on Six Feet Under.
